Frequently Asked Questions

The Jade is a little different from a traditional hotel — and we think that's part of what makes staying here so special! We're a small, independently owned oceanfront resort tucked into a natural hillside on beautiful Quadra Island.

We've put together everything you might want to know before your stay below. We love being transparent about our unique property so you can arrive knowing exactly what to expect — and if there's anything we haven't covered, we're always happy to chat!

 KNOW BEFORE YOU BOOK

Q: What kind of resort is The Jade?

A: The Jade isn't your traditional hotel-style resort. We're a small, independently owned, 11-accommodation oceanfront property built into a forested hillside overlooking Gowlland Harbour.

There is no traditional lobby or front desk, check-in is contactless, and we don't offer daily housekeeping. Instead, you'll have your own private accommodation and the freedom to settle in and enjoy the property at your own pace. Someone is always on-site, and we're just a phone call or text away whenever you need us.

The property was originally built in the 1970s and still has plenty of its original West Coast character. You'll find uneven stone pathways, stairs, shared outdoor spaces, wildlife, towering trees and a whole lot of nature.

If you're looking for a polished, traditional hotel experience, we may not be your perfect match. If you're looking for somewhere relaxed, quirky, beautiful and immersed in nature — you'll probably feel right at home here.

Q: How does contactless check-in work? Is there a front desk?

A: The Jade offers contactless self check-in, which means there's no need to stop at a front desk when you arrive — you can head straight to your accommodation and settle in!

Before your stay, we'll email you everything you need, including directions, parking information and your suite access details.

While check-in is contactless, you're definitely not on your own! Someone is always on-site and we're just a phone call or text away if you need help, have questions or would simply like us to come say hello.

We love giving our guests the freedom to arrive and settle in at their own pace while still being available whenever we're needed.

Q: Is The Jade family-friendly?

A: Yes! We love welcoming families to The Jade. That said, we encourage families with young children to take a good look through our property photos before booking to make sure The Jade feels like the right fit for your family and the ages of your children.

The Jade is an older oceanfront property built into a natural hillside. Throughout the property you'll find changes in elevation, uneven stone walkways, stairs, open-style railings and some elevated areas without guardrails. Our two-storey chalets also have steep stairs leading to the sleeping loft.

Because of the natural terrain and waterfront setting, younger children may require close supervision while exploring the property.

We try to be as transparent as possible about our unique property and encourage guests to browse our photos and reach out before booking if they have any questions or concerns. We're always happy to help you decide whether The Jade is the right fit for your family!

Q: Is The Jade suitable for guests with mobility concerns?

A: The Jade was built into a natural hillside, so accessibility is something we want guests to consider carefully before booking.

Getting around the property involves changes in elevation, uphill and downhill walking, uneven stone pathways and stairs. Our main parking area is located at the top of the property and vehicles cannot be driven directly to most accommodation doors.

Our Chalets are two storeys, with the sleeping area upstairs via a steeper-than-typical staircase with a handrail. Our King Suites are ground-level and may be a better option for guests with mobility concerns. King Suite #2 has ramp access, while King Suite #1 requires four stairs.

The Jade is not wheelchair accessible. If you or someone in your group has mobility concerns, please reach out before booking. We're always happy to talk through the property and help determine whether one of our accommodations may be a comfortable fit.

Q: What's the difference between a King Suite and a Chalet?

A: Our King Suites are ground-level accommodations designed for two guests, with one king bed, a couch at the foot of the bed, a private bathroom and a full kitchen.

Our Chalets are two-storey A-frames designed for up to four guests, with a kitchen, bathroom, living and dining area on the main floor and two queen beds upstairs in the sleeping loft. Chalet #3 also has a Twin XL bed upstairs.

Please keep in mind that the stairs leading to the sleeping lofts are steeper than a typical household staircase.

Q: What accommodation is the quietest?

A: The Chalets are your best choice if peace and quiet are a top priority.

Our King Suites are located on the ground level with A-frame Chalets above them. The Jade was lovingly built in the 1970s and, while she's solid and full of character, she isn't fully soundproof. Guests staying in a King Suite may occasionally hear footsteps or running water from the accommodation above.

Since the Chalets are on the upper level, you won't have another accommodation above you.

 ARRIVAL & YOUR STAY

Q: What time is check-in and check-out?

A: Check-in begins at 4:00 PM and check-out is at 10:00 AM.

Early check-in and late check-out may be available for $20 per hour, subject to availability. Please reach out to us if you'd like to request either and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Q: Where do I park?

A: Long-term guest parking is located at the top of the hill near the entrance to The Jade.

Because our property is built into a hillside, you won't be able to drive directly to most accommodation doors. We have designated loading zones throughout the property where you can briefly stop to unload or load your belongings before moving your vehicle to the main parking area.

If you have mobility concerns, we do have have one parking spot that can be reserved for you. Please contact us ahead of time so we can make sure we can reserve for you during your stay.

Q: Can I stay parked in a loading zone?

A: No. Our loading zones are shared between multiple accommodations, and some also need to remain available for emergency access and guests with mobility needs.

You're welcome to use them while actively loading or unloading, then please move your vehicle to the main guest parking area.

Q: Do you offer daily housekeeping?

A:  We don't provide traditional daily housekeeping during your stay. Your accommodation will be freshly cleaned and fully prepared for your arrival, and then we give you the space to settle in and make yourself at home.

If you need fresh towels, linens, additional supplies or anything else during your stay, just call or text us. We're always happy to help!

INSIDE YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Q: Does my accommodation have a kitchen?

A: Yes! Every King Suite and Chalet has a full kitchen with an oven, fridge, microwave, drip coffee maker and toaster, along with cookware, dishes and utensils.

We also provide a few basics including cooking oil, salt, pepper and sugar, as well as tea and locally roasted coffee to get your stay started.

Q: Is there air conditioning?

A: Because the King Suites are built into the hillside, they tend to stay naturally cooler throughout the summer.

Our A-frame Chalets can get warmer upstairs during hot summer days. We recommend keeping the curtains closed while you're out exploring and opening the upstairs window and sliding door once the evening cools down. Fans are also provided in each accommodation to help circulate the cooler evening air.

Q: Are there screens on the windows?

A: Yes! All of our windows have screens so you can enjoy that beautiful island air while keeping the bugs outside where they belong.

Q: Are there TV's?

A: Nope! We've intentionally chosen not to include TVs in our accommodations.

The Jade is designed as a place to slow down, soak in the ocean views and disconnect to reconnect — with nature, with each other and with yourself.

Most guests tell us they don't miss having a TV at all, and many say it ends up being one of their favourite parts of staying here.

Q: Is Wi-Fi available?

A: Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort.

You'll find the network information and password, along with lots of other helpful information about your stay, in the Welcome to The Jade book inside your accommodation.

Q: Are linens and towels provided?

A: Absolutely. Fresh linens and bath towels will be waiting for you when you arrive.

As part of our efforts to conserve water and energy, we don't automatically replace towels and linens each day. If you need anything refreshed during your stay, just let us know.

Q: Are there laundry facilities?

A: We don't have guest laundry facilities on-site. There is the Gleam laundromat on Quadra Island in Quathiaski Cove if you need to do laundry during your stay.

Q: Is there a broom in my accommodation?

A: Yes! You'll find a broom and dustpan beside the fridge for any quick cleanups during your stay.

 THE PROPERTY & WATERFRONT

Q: Can I swim at The Jade?

A: Absolutely! Gowlland Harbour is a beautiful place for a swim and guests are welcome to enjoy the waterfront.

The shoreline is natural and there can be barnacles and slippery rocks, so we recommend bringing sandals or water shoes.

Q: Can I bring or rent a kayak or paddleboard?

A: Yes! You can launch your own kayak, canoe or paddleboard right from our waterfront.

We also have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available for guests to rent on a first-come, first-served basis for $11.30 per hour, per watercraft.

Life jackets, paddles and instructions are available down by the water.

Q: Can I swim at The Jade?

A: Absolutely — this is Quadra Island!

You may spot deer, raccoons, eagles, seals, otters and plenty of other island visitors during your stay.

Please admire wildlife from a safe distance and avoid leaving food outside.

Q: Is the tap water safe to drink?

A: Yes! The Jade has fresh well water that you can enjoy straight from the tap.

Like many Gulf and Discovery Island communities, water is a precious resource here, especially during our dry summer months. We do our very best to conserve it and greatly appreciate our guests helping us do the same.

 PETS

Q: Are pets welcome?

A: Yes! The Jade is pet-friendly and we love welcoming four-legged guests.

Please let us know before arrival if you're bringing a pet so we can have their little welcome package ready. It includes a water dish, 100% wild Canadian salmon treats, a pet towel and a furniture cover.

Pets must be kept on leash while outside, aren't permitted on uncovered furniture and shouldn't be left unattended in the accommodation unless crated. We also ask guests to keep our peaceful setting in mind if their pet tends to be particularly vocal.

A maximum of two pets are permitted per accommodation.

Our pet fee, including tax, is:

1 pet — $56.50 per stay

2 pets — $84.75 per stay
